Sweeping Changes

December 11, 2012

It’s been a while since I’ve published anything here… I’ve been busy with settling into a new home only to quickly look for another one, and I haven’t been able to watch many movies to review since I don’t have Internet access in my room for Netflix. I’ve also been thinking of how to make (slightly) unkommon better as I’m tiring of how it’s run today. Consider this an official announcement of sweeping changes which will happen very soon.

There’s an iOS news app out in the wild called NextDraft [iTunes link] which I’ve been reading rather religiously lately, and I like the format enough to try something similar. NextDraft is effectively a blog wrapped into an app, with ten short articles by Dave Pell published to it each day. The articles are one-to-two paragraphs of commentary on news items that catch Pell’s attention, and it’s an approach that (slightly) unkommon should try.

One of the problems I’ve experienced is that I want to publish a significant amount of content, however I’ve had difficulty reaching high word counts every weekday. My goal has been to publish one high quality article each day, at 700 words minimum, but I often find myself running out of opinion somewhere between 400 and 500 words, and those articles get shelved. It’s an immeasurable waste of time that I need to address.

I think that I can publish ten short articles each day covering varying topics. I don’t know because I haven’t tried, but I read a lot of news every day and I know that I have at least two paragraphs in me for each news item that I read. Whether or not I can offer a unique take on multiple articles each day remains to be seen, but it’s something that I want to try and I think that if I can pull it off, it will be better for everybody.

I won’t start this change until next Monday, and I don’t know if I’ll stick with the curation approach, but I have to try. I credit Dave Pell completely for the idea, it’s in no way my own and I wouldn’t be doing this without NextDraft. One thing that will never change on this blog is giving credit where credit is due, as I myself have had stuff stolen without attribution, and it’s made me upset. I won’t ever be what I hate, and that’s a practice I encourage you to copy. :-)

In addition, I’m going to start publishing movie reviews to my old inactive blog, Picture This! Reviews sometime next year. Movie reviews don’t have a place on a news-focused blog, which is what (slightly) unkommon is set to become, and I think it makes sense to be focused and not have some hybrid blog which serves different interests. I’ve noticed that very few people are interested in both film and tech which has been a problem for (slightly) unkommon for a while.

(slightly) unkommon for curated news, Picture This! Reviews for movie reviews, and a webcomic called Seizure Prone. That’s the lineup which I’m tackling by myself explicitly, and with the other blogs that I write for and my presence on Twitter, I’m about to have an extremely full plate as a netizen.

I’m looking forward to it, and I’m looking forward to not letting you guys down. Thanks for everything.
