What The Friday: iPad 3 in the Fall?

July 1, 2011

The sources pointed out that Apple only plans to launch one model of the new iPhone, while iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule with both set to be produced in small volumes in August and the volume will start picking up in September and October.

Reports Digitimes. When Apple released the iPad 2 in March, I predicted that there would be a new iPad released in September, following what John Gruber had said. I have been firm, however, on that I believe it will likely be an iPad 2 refresh, with storage doubled for all models while keeping the price the same. 32 GB, 64 GB, & 128GB models for $499, $599, & $699 respectively would undercut the competition as much as any other addition.

Nevertheless, I do believe that there will be an update to the iPad line, whether I’m right on how it’s updated is up for discussion. And be sure to consider this: The original iPad was released in April 2010, with the iPad 2 being released eleven months following, rather than an entire year. If there ends up being a September/October 2011 refresh, it will have been six months after the iPad 2, rather than five months. And a six month interim seems to be a lot more reasonable for consumers than five would. That’s why I believe Apple refreshed the first iPad after eleven months rather than an entire year.

And hey, we should know in less than three months, which isn’t a massive amount of time. So until then, have fun speculating!
